Quick Progress from Convening the Region Summit - Middle Tennessee Mayors Caucus and Transit Alliance Groups Created Yesterday in Response to Dean's Call!
NASHVILLE, TN - July 24, 2009 - City and County Mayors from the ten-county CRT region met with Nashville Mayor Karl Dean on Wednesday and agreed to create the Middle Tennessee Mayors Caucus.   The group heard from Nancy Sharpe, Mayor of Greenwood Village, Colorado and Chair of the Denver area's Metro Mayors Caucus on the progress that their group has made on issues important to the Denver region.   Local mayors that attended the meeting expressed hope that similar success could be achieved in middle Tennessee through the increased collaboration that a mayors caucus will facilitate. Gallatin Mayor Jo Ann Graves was elected as the first chair of the caucus and has agreed to lead the effort to organize this new group that will focus on collaborative efforts toward regional opportunities and issues.
The Middle Tennessee Mayors Caucus also called for the formation of a Transit Alliance, a proposed coalition of private-sector organizations that will help promote regional transit issues.  Mayor Dean announced that he has asked Charles Bone to organize this important effort.   In accepting Mayor Dean's request Mr. Bone "Thanked Mayor Dean for this opportunity to serve the region and asked the Mayors in attendance to work with him to identify business leaders from each of their communities to join with the Transit Alliance effort.  "Executive staff from the Nashville MPO, Cumberland Region Tomorrow, the Nashville Chamber, Nashville MTA and TDOT, along with Mayor Dean's staff will provide assistance to the Transit Alliance as it begins its important mission.  The Middle Tennessee Mayors Caucus agreed to meet again in September.
